I have often associated sangria with summer. There is just something about that fruity sweet wine mixed with delicious liquor soaked fruit and screams outside summer party.  As I stared at a bowl full of honeycrisp apples I knew I had to do something with them before they went to waste.   I searched online and found a lovely Fall inspired sangria.  It mixes deep fragrant flavors of cinnamon, ginger and cloves with light crisp citrus flavors.  It would be perfect for a party or even to enjoy alone :)   My favorite part of the sangria was munching on the apples that were left over. Amazing!  The great thing about using honeycrisp apples is that they are crisp (the name really does fit the product), hold up great to soaking and still keep some of their natural sweetness.  If you are planning a party I seriously recommend making this.  I used one of my favorite unoaked chardonnays, Wishing Tree, but use whatever unoaked you prefer. Enjoy!

Honeycrisp Apple Sangria:

2 Honeycrisp apples
One 750-milliliter bottle unoaked Chardonnay
1/3 C. peach Schnapps
1/4 C. pisco (I could not find this so I used a bit more peach schnapps)
1/4 C. honey (I used orange blossom)
2 oranges- 1 quartered
1 lemon – quartered
1 lime – quartered
2 cinnamon sticks
2 quarter-size slices of fresh ginger
3 whole cloves
2 T. sugar
1/2 t. ground cinnamon
Ice
Club soda
Mint sprigs – for garnish (did not use)

Peel, core and chop one of the apples. In a bowl, combine the Chardonnay, Schnapps, pisco and honey. Add the quartered orange, the lemon, lime, cinnamon sticks, the chopped apple, ginger and cloves and refrigerate at least 4 hours. (I let mine sit overnight)

Strain the sangria into a pitcher. Peel, core and finely chop the remaining apple. Peel, section and chop the remaining orange. Mix the apple and orange in a bowl.

On a small plate, blend the sugar and cinnamon. Moisten the rims of wine glasses and dip in the cinnamon sugar to coat. Fill the glasses with ice. Pour in the sangria until three-quarters full. Top with a splash of club soda. Garnish with a spoonful of the chopped apple and orange and a mint sprig.

My Friends Call Me Frenchie

They do, I swear. Ok, maybe only a handful of them actually call me Frenchie, or maybe only two people have ever called me by the name, but I like it so I will pretend that it is my nickname (since I am French-Canadian after all!).

ANYWAYS (sorry for the minor diversion)… I just stumbled upon this fabulous cocktail thanks to miss Eva Rose. Thinking about giving it a try at one of the upcoming 4th of July BBQ’s on my agenda!

French 75

  • 2 oz. gin or vodka
  • 1 oz. simple syrup
  • 1 oz. lemon juice
  • Brut Champagne or other dry sparkling wine
  • Lemon twist for garnish

Combine vodka (gin), lemon juice and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker filled 1/3 full of ice. Shake thoroughly and pour into chilled champagne flute. top off with champers and garnish with lemon twist.

NOTE: To make simple syrup, combine equal parts of sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Bring to a slow rolling boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low and cook for 5 minutes. Transfer to a heatproof container and let cool to room temperature. Cover tightly and refrigerate until chilled through; store indefinitely.

OR omit the simple syrup and add a splash of Sprite or Gingerale for a sugary twist.

What a refreshing looking treat…ahh day-dreaming of summer time

Watermelon Mimosa

Ingredients:

  • 1 quarter of a large watermelon, about 5 cups cut in small pieces
  • Juice from 6 oranges, about 2 cups juice
  • 1 bottle of chilled champagne, cava, prosecco or other sparkling wine
  • Sugar to taste, based on sweetness of the fruit
  • Mint to garnish

Preparation:

  1. Blend the watermelon chunks with the orange juice and sugar to taste until you have a smooth pure, strain if needed.
  2. Chill the watermelon orange mix in the refrigerator until ready to prepare the drinks.
  3. Pour the watermelon orange mix into champagne flutes, about half full.
  4. Add the champagne or other sparkling wine, pouring it gently to avoid from making a bubbly mess.
  5. Stir lightly and garnish with a fresh sprig of mint.

Must Do in San Fran - Try Lion Pub’s Fresh Squeezed Cocktails

*I apologize for the delay in posts! I just got back and I am very excited to catch you up on all my SF happenings.

I arrived in San Francisco on Friday night, right around dinner time. Jeremy clearly knows my love for Mediterranean food so he suggested we go to La Mediterranee on Filmore in Pacific Heights. It was delish. The ambiance was just what I was looking for after a long flight and it was the perfect little date spot for J and I to catch up after not having seen each other in 6 weeks. The hummus was to die for and I thoroughly enjoyed the house wine. Definitely a cute casual spot with decent grub.

We skipped dessert and instead headed to a unique SF spot called Lion Pub (on Divisadero St. btw California & Sacramento) for an after dinner beverage. They are known for their fresh squeezed cocktails (the juicers are attached to the bar!! How fun is that!) and boy are they yummy.

I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned a few times how much I love fresh squeezed grapefruit juice, so imagine how happy I was to sip on a fresh squeezed greyhound (grapefruit & vodka) and spend some qt with Jeremy. My favorite part was with every sip, bits and pieces of grapefruit came up through the straw! The drinks were only $6, which is a deal if ya ask me, but maybe I am just a jaded NY’er. They are also known for their screwdrivers, fresh fruit mojitos, and their free snack bar of cheeses, crackers, and sometimes even sushi. These drinks are so delicious you need to be careful not to suck down too many!
