Double the Road Trip, Double the Fun

Holiday weekends are the best. I’m currently at work, sipping a pineapple mango mimosa (thanks to my cubemate for the pre-holiday bevvys!) which believe it or not is totally socially accepted the day before a holiday (at least I think it is). We’re counting down the minutes until it’s 1 PM like little school girls waiting for the bell to ring.

I’ve got two mini road trips on the agenda this weekend - up to Napa to stay at J’s parents condo, sun ourselves, and meet a few friends to wine taste (not complaining) - and then down to Carmel by the Sea to stay at this cutie Country Garden Inn (photo below) for more relaxing, exploring, and sunning (definitely not complaining!) - gotta love the California coast.

Where are you headed?

Check out this list of west coast or east coast road trips from FathomAway and start planning your next!

In honor of a crazy couple of weeks (hence why the blogging has been rather light) wanted to show you all - BIG JAMBOX by Jawbone. Know you’ve seen my posts about JAMBOX, well now it’s just a little bigger with even more sound. IMHO, it’s the perfect home accessory - think dinner parties, picnics, beach blankets, or weekend getaways.

Spring and summer never sounded so good. (I had to say it)

My parental units are in Italy for two weeks. They really live the life, I tell ya! Rented a villa with a private chef, toured Rome, Sorento, Banfi, and so much more. So happy for them :)

Happy weekending to all my PJ readers! I’m off for a walk by the water. Ciao for now!

Off to…Coachella!

+++

Via Fathom

“Everyone at Coachella is perpetually smiling. Life’s B.S. baggage has a No Entry sign during Coachella weekend. There is just something about thousands of people pilgraming from all over the world to the desert to dance, listen to music, see famous people rock headbands, and celebrate life that just gets me in the jugular. The desert is known for its incredible healing elements, and I like to believe we are all changed people when we leave. I may be projecting a profound truth onto a 72-hour party, but I stand behind it 100 percent. Is it next year yet?”

These are super duper long overdue, but I’ve finally started to organize some photos from my incredible vaca a month ago ( a month ago??? HOW is that possible?).

Click here to view the full album.

Here are a few of my favs for one reason or another.

Left to right:

- Danielle on the streets of Antigua, Guatemala. The buildings were so colorful and the cobblestone was gorgeous.

- Sarah, D, and I outside the ATM Cave Tour. We have no idea the type of journey we were about to embark on!

- Group hike in of Tikal Mayan Ruins. We needed a rest, those temples were no joke!

- Little boy, Caye Caulker Belize

- Me, grass, Tikal Guatemala. Had just purchased that hand-made headband.

- Danielle giving young girls stickers in exchange for their pictures on the streets of Antigua. Best way to make little kids smile - give them toys!

- Lost World sign, Tikal Guatemala

- Me and my backpack, streets of Antigua

- 3 of us, inside ATM cave - 650 feet under the ground!

- Pacaya Volcano hike at sunset, Guatemala

I second that, Andrea! I’ve knocked 11 of these off my list thus far and would like to add the others to my bucket list. #TravelBug4Life

Would love to hit up every one of these in my lifetime.

Far Away or Just a Phone Call Away?

Dear Diary,

Confession: Living on the west coast and having so many friends and nearly all of my family members on the east coast is hard. There I said it. It’s really f-ing hard sometimes.

I absolutely love living in California, no questions about it, but after settling in for the last 8 months (I can’t believe it has already been 8 months!) it has indeed started to hit me that I am going to miss out on a lot being out here. Sure, I can hop on a flight and spend holidays with friends and family, but it’s the little things that I miss the most. It’s my best friend running a marathon and not being able to be at the finish line, it’s missing friends birthdays that I haven’t missed in nearly 8 years, it’s the fact that my brother can pop over to my parents house (in Florida) any day of the week for dinner and I can’t, it’s missing two of my best friends wedding showers AND bachelorettes this summer, it’s not being able to get coffee or a glass of wine on a Sunday afternoon, it’s not being able to call my best friend or my mom when I get home from work when I really need to talk because they’re already in bed. It’s so many of the little things.

The thing is, I love it out here and my way of life has significantly improved. This city is everything I imagined it to be - and more. I feel so alive living here and I’ve barely scratched the surface. For all the little things I miss I know being here I’ve gained a lot. I am so blessed to have such good new friends out here, a loving and supportive boyfriend whose family is here, a great roommate, and so many new people, places, and experiences. I signed up for this, and I wouldn’t want it any other way, I just finally am realizing that, ya know what? It’s not easy.

Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t think it would be a walk in the park to move across the country, away from the entire life that I built in NYC - I knowing made the choice and was ready to take on the consequences. I just want my friends and family to know that I miss them and I think about them all the time and just because I’m not there doesn’t mean that I love or support them any less.

Its not the actual distance that makes me feel far away - it’s the balance between building a life here and maintaining and feeling a part of my close relationships back there.

I wonder, is a phone call away, close enough?

Dear Diary,

I’ve been back from what was such an incredible vacation for about a week now. It’s crazy how thrown back into reality we become. I was certainly floating on my vacation cloud all of last week (ask my co-workers!) - which is one reason why I haven’t posted much since before my trip. It was such an amazing escape from reality and SO needed and I’ve been slowly but surely readjusting back to “the real world”. As I am sure you noticed I was able to use instagram a few times - we were able to connect to WiFi at our hostels and a lot of restaurants BUT I honestly didn’t check my email once - only allowed myself to text my mom and Jeremy to let them know I was safe and sound and post a couple vaca pix!

The trip felt much longer than 10 days which was amazing. We moved around a lot and accomplished a ton - we hiked The Pacaya Volcano and The Tikal Mayan Ruins in Guatemala, and went on the most incredible ATM Mayan Cave tour in Belize - and then spent the last 4 days beaching, boating, and snorkeling on the islands off the coast of Belize (Caye Caulker to be exact). My backpack totally held up and my packing skills were almost perfect. Note to self: Use a backpack on long trips - so much easier to get around.

The picture above was taken in a park in Antigua, Guatemala that reminded me so much of Washington square park in NYC. A nice man with a Polaroid camera charged us $2 for the photo and we went for it! [Left to right: me, Sarah, and Danielle]

Sarah and Danielle are friends from high-school who I met when I moved out to SF. I was so psyched they asked me to join them on this trip since it’s pretty rare to find people who you can happily spend every waking minute with for 10 days straight.

We had a ball - meet some great people, saw amazing sights, and went amazing places. Such a good reminder to myself to make sure I take the vacation time I deserve each year. There is so much out there and it is so healthy to be removed from our reality to gain a perspective on our lives and the world around us we could not gain otherwise.

I feel refreshed and ready to plan my next trip! :)

I’ll be posting a bunch of pictures so stay tuned for some fun photos from our journey.

xx

Heading to the airport shortly which means I’ll be sitting at the airport bar cheersing to “entering into a stress free zone” aka vacation! Apologies in advance that due to the fact that I’ll literally be off the grid I likely won’t be able to blog until the week I get back (10 days from now). That means, no Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Instagram, Foodspotting, etc., for 10 days! I will certainly have lots to share upon my refreshed return.
Adios amigos!

Packing List: Guatemala & Belize

Headed to Guatemala and Belize on a 10 day backpacking trip tomorrow night! You might remember when I booked the trip back in October - wow, how time flies!

I spent most of my day off on Monday getting prepped for the trip - running errands, packing, and all that good stuff. Packing for a trip of this kind can be quite the challenge when you’re bringing it all on your back!

Here’s my packing list below as well as a few travel prep tips:

Backpack

1 yoga towel (extra absorbent)

1 small beach towel

1 hostel sheet

1 pair of jeans (wear on plane)

3 pair of jean shorts

1 onesie

4 tank tops, 3 t-shirts

2 short printed sun dresses

1 bathing suit covers

1 maxi dress

2 cardigans

1 knit pull over (wear on plane)

1 zip up north face fleece

1 pair yoga pants

1 pair of leggings

2 pair pjs

3 bathing suits (only need 2, but I bought a new one I have to bring!)

1 American Apparel skirt

1 pair of Toms (wear on plane)

1 pair Nike sneakers

2 pair of sandals (rainbows/ Jesus slippers)

1 pair of cheap sunglasses

1 travel size hair dryer; 1 travel size straighter

toiletries/underwear/bras

camera

1 purse aka adjustable strap satchel

6 mini cliff bars

And… believe it or not all of that fit in my backpack!

Just a few travel prep tips:

1. Yoga towels - are great for this kind of trip because they are compact and extra absorbent as well as quick to dry.

2. Hostel sheets - are a must. They are sold in most athletic stores in the travel section and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Great to have in case you end up in a not so ideal sleeping situation - at least you have a clean sheet with you.

3. Check the weather - make sure you check to see what the weather conditions are for the week or so that you’ll be in each country. Weather can vary from day to night and certain months of the year can be dry, wet, buggy, etc. so it’s important to know what you’re up against and how to pack accordingly.

4. Airport attire - this might be obvious, but it’s always a good idea to plan ahead and wear on the plane whatever you’re heaviest pieces are so they aren’t taking up room in your bag.

5. Make copies of your passport - god forbid it was stolen or lost, it’s smart to have copies with you in a different bag or with someone your traveling with (and with someone back at home) in case you need them.

6. Gel Mani - If you’re anything like me and get your nails manicured regularly, before a long trip I recommend getting a gel manicure. It’s a little extra $, but is said to last up to two weeks without chipping (I’ll let you know how it goes!)

8. Call your bank - very smart to call up your bank and credit card companies and let them know you will be traveling internationally and the time period you are away. This way they can put a note on your account and your account won’t get shut down due to suspected fraud (like my did when I was in Spain a few years ago, no bueno!).

7. Last, but certainly not least, I always like to leave a little extra room in my suitcase or bag for the things I might accumulate along the way. Sounds silly, but you’ll be so happy you did.

Ballooning Above the Valley

You guys might think this is cheesy, but I’ve just added this little adventure to my bucket list - Ballooning! I’d be open to trying it in many different locations (here Turkey is known for this!), but stumbled upon a spot in Napa that looks just lovely. Call me crazy or full of “hot air” (had to say it!), but something about hot air balloons and champagne is just so damn romantic!

7 years ago today I was on Semester at Sea when “the wave” hit.
I make an appearance in the video at about 18:50 wearing a pretty ridiculous green velor jumpsuit! Take a look.

You might remember this photo from a while ago, but this is where I am headed tonight on a red-eye. Will be working for two days which will be torture starring at the gorgeous beach, but I think I’ll survive! Spending the holiday with fam and friends in the warm weather for once. I’m not complaining :)
More from sunny FLA upon my arrival!
